When it comes to cafes, most of us look for a good cup of coffee, flatlay-friendly breakfast sets, and an Insta-worthy décor. All of this is available in Singapore, but if you’ve ‘been there, done that’, a trip across the border to check out the café scene there might be in order.
There are numerous possibilities in our northern neighbor. If you’re lost and don’t know where to start, here are 25 JB cafes to visit first.
– Jalan Dhoby, Trus & Wong Ah Fook –
1. Bev C – Signature espresso ice cubes won’t dilute your iced coffee
Bev C is a cafe that sells pieces from its own apparel brand as well as homemade beverages and sweets.
The Espresso Ice Cube beverages (from RM16, S$4.70) are the cafe’s signature. Yes, the ice cubes are made of espresso, so no more diluted coffees from leaving your drinks out in the sun.

Peckish guests can load up on sweet and savoury treats like OH MAMA! (RM18, S$5.28), a chicken rendang croissant, or Dome Cakes (RM16, S$4.70), which are only available on Friday and Sunday. These marble-glazed cakes are ideal for your next brunch Instagram picture.

Plus, you get free rein to customise your own beverage, selecting from 4 tea bases, 15 flavours, and 9 toppings available. If you’re counting, that’s 540 drinks you can mix and match.

The options can be bewildering, so stick to our favourite orders for a fail-safe drink. Get a fresh milk base, banana flavour and vanilla custard to make a Korean-style banana milk drink. Alternatively, a BBT classic with a milk tea base, caramel taste, and pearl topping is available.
If you don’t want to make your own cocktails, there are simpler options. Iced Thai Milk Tea (RM9.80, S$2.88) or Iced Chai Latte (RM9.80, S$2.88) are both excellent choices.

3. The Ice-Cream Project – Fresh ice cream made using liquid nitrogen

The glass case of flavours is the first thing most people see when they go into an ice cream parlour. This display, however, is noticeably absent from The Ice-Cream Project. That is not to mean that there is only one flavour available. Rather, ice cream is created to order, with liquid nitrogen used to whip cream and sugar into a frozen dessert.

While they don’t have the most taste options, they do have some unusual ones, such as Peanut Butter Cookie Dough and Milo Dinosaur, which Singaporeans would no sure recognise.

4. The Replacement – Muij-esque aesthetic

Before you go to The Replacement, clear off your phone’s gallery to make room for all the wonderful #OOTDs you’ll be snapping. The all-white room, marble walls, and beech wood furnishings will make bright clothing stand out.

Of course, you shouldn’t just come here for the looks; there’s also plenty to eat here, including brunch staples, poke bowls, burgers, and pastas. Churros (from RM15.90, S$4.67) are also available, with both savoury and sweet dips.

5. Flowers in the Window – Garden-themed with plants & flowers

We don’t blame you if you think Flowers in the Window has been abandoned, with vines crawling over the facade. However, the long lines of people waiting to get in will demonstrate differently.

All that greenery is another giveaway for what this JB cafe offers: clean and healthy food options like their lotus chips salmon bowl (RM24, ~S$6.97) – a warm salad of mashed peas, roasted pumpkin and avocado, crispy lotus, and grilled salmon.
Even their small bites are on the healthier side, such as their kakiage (RM9, ~S$2.62) vegetable tempura and baby spinach salad (RM9, ~S$2.62). They also have pastries and cakes (from RM12, ~S$3.49) in their display case that look almost too good to eat.

6. Roast & Coffee – Authentic Hainanese breakfast spot

If you usually start your days with Yakun or Toast Box, try Roast & Coffee. It’s a classic Hainanese eatery serving kaya toast, eggs, and Nanyang-style coffee. Even the crockery is retro-inspired, with vintage floral motif cups and blue porcelain bowls.

There are some familiar products on the menu, such as Kampung Eggs (RM3, S$0.87) and Double Butter Kaya (RM3.20, S$0.93). Some of their dishes, like as the Homemade Zui Kueh (RM6.90, S$2.01), even have a Johorean touch. These have a sweet sauce sprayed on top, which drastically changes the flavour.

8. Kafuka Cafe & Music Studio – Japanese–inspired & minimalistic

Time appears to slow down in this sleek and pleasant tiny room named Kafuka. The Japanese zakka-inspired design is a welcome contrast from the standard industrial interiors seen in many cafes these days. If that isn’t enough to entice you, they also have charming pots of miniature plants and cuddly companions that liven up the entire place.
Kafuka’s menu, like its aesthetic, is highly influenced by Japanese cuisine, featuring delicacies like as their iconic Pork Patty Burger (RM19, S$5.56), Karaage Chicken Burger (RM19, S$5.56), and Cheesecakes (RM12, S$3.51).

You don’t have to travel to Japan to sample Japanese-French pastries and artisanal sweets. Sorella Cafe’s pastry chefs make their pastries and cakes by hand, so you know they’ve put a lot of thought and effort into what they’re providing.

Their specialty Kori Lemon Cake (RM15.90, S$4.64) is a frozen delicacy full with lemon zest – a refreshing dessert to beat the heat. If you’re looking for something hot, they also provide Croissant Sandwiches (from RM24.90, S$7.27) created with fresh croissants cooked in-house.

10. L.café by Lavender – Both a bakery & cafe

Think of L.café as a very hip Western bakery-cum-cafe, where you get to pick from a wide variety of freshly baked bread and pastries to go along with your coffee fix. They’re owned by Lavender, a Malaysian chain of bakeries that even has outlets at Jewel Changi and ION Orchard.
It’s not just their viennoiseries that are baked in house. The cafe also makes it a point to make its own jams and even sausages without the use of preservatives or hard-to-pronounce chemicals, meaning you’ll be downing food that’s as freshly made as it gets.

Try the Chicken Ham & Cheese Bun (RM3.50, S$1.03) and Otak Cheese Bun (RM4.70, S$1.38) for savoury options that can also be dabao-ed for breakfast. Toffee Danish (RM7.30, S$2.14) and Chocolate Hazelnut Banana Danish (RM6.80, S$2.02), on the other hand, would satiate any sweet taste.

11. Morihana – House-shaped cafe with homemade bakes & pastries

The silhouette of Morihana looks like it’s been lifted straight off drawings of houses we did as kids – complete with a little chimney on the roof. The cutesy aesthetic isn’t just in the cafe’s exterior, you’ll also be able to spot it in their pastries as well.

Take, for example, their famous Azure (RM24, S$6.97), which features a lime apple mousse perfectly moulded into a ball. You’ll also want to take pictures with their charming Teddy Bear (RM25, S$7.27), which is covered with a salted caramel sauce and contains Valrhona caramel chocolate mousse and coffee ganache.
While many of them seem indulgent, their baked goods are low in sugar and contain no preservatives, so go ahead and indulge.

12. Café Racer by Grillbar – American-style diner by a bike fan

Even if there are dozens of Vespas exhibited on the walls and dining floor, you have not entered a carpark when you visit Café Racer by Grillbar. These belonged to the owner, who is a bike enthusiast as well as a foodie.

The rest of the space is reminiscent of an American diner, with red booth seats and a checkered tile floor. The cuisine reflects the same sentiments, with typical diner delicacies like fried onion flower (RM15.95, S$4.68), as well as burgers and milkshakes.

The completely stocked display case is certainly pretty appealing to the eye, but getting one or two pastries is even more pleasing to the stomach.
Caramel Mixed Nut Danish (RM11, S$3.19) with layers of crispy, flakey pastry topped with crunchy nuts is a must-try. It goes well with coffee (from RM11, S$3.19) or their distinctive Callebaut Hot Chocolate (RM16, S$4.68), which is available in 54% or 70% cocoa.
